The Afrehealth-MEPI Partnership and Global Health Education in Africa

Collection launched: Jul 15, 2019

Africa faces enormous challenges. Poverty is widespread. Infant mortality in many countries is still high. AIDS, Ebola and Malaria claim too many lives. Pollution is increasing. Population growth is explosive. Health professionals are too few in number.

But a bright light against this background has been the success of the Medical Education Partnership Initiative (MEPI) and the Nursing Education Partnership Initiative (NEPI) in collaboration with the African Forum for Research and Education (AFREhealth) in building health capacity in Africa. MEPI and NEPI were launched under the President’s Emergency Fund for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), a program created in 2003 by US President George W. Bush to combat the African AIDS pandemic. The immediate goal of these programs was to increase African health professionals at all levels – physicians, nurses, community health workers and teachers. The longer-term goal was to build local health leadership and thus sustainably improve health, save lives, improve productivity, boost economies and strengthen governance.

The papers presented in this Special Collection – all by African researchers - attest to the success of the MEPI-Afrehealth partnership. These papers describe educational programs, present research results and document improvements in health. Annals of Global Health is very proud to present this important work.
